Jumping into crafting in Path of Exile 2 can feel messy at first, especially when you’re staring at a stash loaded with different orbs and not sure what’s worth using. The trick isn't just knowing each orb’s job, it's figuring out the right moment to spend them.
For most of the campaign, think efficiency over perfection – focus on making gear that’s solid enough to keep you moving, not chasing that dream item right away. And yep, most of that comes down to how you handle basic currency like PoE 2 Currency and knowing which tools to use for fast upgrades.
Early on, you’ll be leaning hard on Orbs of Transmutation, Alteration, Augmentation, and Regal Orbs. Find a decent item base – right links, right item level – and start from there. A quick Transmutation turns it magic, then it’s all about rolling Alterations to hit one good mod you’re looking for, like life or a resistance your build desperately needs. If there’s still an empty spot, an Augmentation can fill it. Land two good mods? Regal it to rare for that third, totally random bonus. This little loop is cheap and works well early game without eating up your stash.
One thing to watch – it’s way too easy to over-invest. Before you burn through stacks of orbs, ask yourself: is crafting this cheaper than buying it? Chaos Orbs run the player market, so they’re a good baseline. If you’re about to sink 20 or 30 Chaos worth of mats into a mid-tier helmet, check trade first – chances are you’ll see something better for far less. The real win in early crafting is spotting the items that need just a tiny nudge to be great. Sometimes slapping a third mod from the bench onto that “almost perfect” rare is more than enough to carry you.
Essences can really change the game for targeted crafting. Instead of gambling with dozens of Alterations hoping for one roll, an Essence pins down exactly what you need. Need fire res right now? An Essence of Anger locks it in, no drama.
Use them on solid bases, then finish the rest with whatever tools you’ve got – maybe bench craft the missing resist or boost a key stat. The bench is huge for plugging those little gaps in your gear without blowing your budget. Just keep the focus on small, smart upgrades that move your build forward and make the most of your path of exile 2 currency.
